Renting a sailboat
Recreational sailing
Cruising trips of several days or longer may require a deep immersion in logistics, navigation, meteorology, local geography and history, fishing lore, sailing knowledge, general psychological management, and uncertainty. Chartering a boat is often much cheaper than a regular holiday on land. It inevitably develops self-reliance, accountability, economics, and many other useful skills. In addition to developing sailing skills, all different everyday needs of daily life must also be discussed. There are tasks that everyone in the family can play to help contribute to a healthy outdoor adventure for everyone.

How much does a sailboat charter cost?
Sailboat rental rates start at about EUR 1,000 a week in the low season for a 32-foot classic boat. During the high season, the brand-new 55-foot ship’s charter rate would be about €8,000 a week. The average price for charter customers in the Mediterranean Sea is around EUR 3.500 per week for charters. If you wish to hire a skipper on top of that in addition to food, you need to pay about EUR 150 per day.
The Eastern Mediterranean typically offers lower yacht charter rates than the Western Mediterranean. Even charter rates for sailboats in the Baltic Sea and Holland are lower than in the Mediterranean Sea. If you book a lot early, you’ll get a 5 to 25 percent early booking discount. If you are lucky, you can get a highly discounted last-minute yacht charter, but you should be aware that the most sought-after and newest yachts are probably no longer available.
Best locations to charter a sailboat
What are Croatia’s ports of entry for the charter of sailboats?
Sailing in Croatia! We suggest charter from Pula or Punat on the Krk island for sailboat rentals in Istria or Kvarner Bay. The Kornati Islands are the perfect sailing escape route. Hire a boat from Trogir or nearby Seget Donji, Solta Island near Split, Marina Kastela, Split or Dubrovnik for a trip to the South Dalmatian Islands (Brac, Hvar, Vis, and Korcula).
Sailboat Rental Greece: the most popular sailing holiday country in the world!
Dream sailing on the Greek islands? Charter operators in Greece have large charter fleets of Ionian Sea yachts. Corfu, Preveza, or Lefkas are going to rent a sailboat. The Ionian Islands are ideally suited for family cruises. However, international sailors do not blast Meltemi during the season, and the waters between the islands and the mainland are well protected.
Classic Greek sailing, for example, also applies to the Aegean Sea: explore the Sporades with a yacht from Volos or Skiathos Island. In the North Aegean Sea, in Halkidiki, sailing holidays in Greece can also be experienced: numerous boat rental companies also operate in Keramoti between Kavala and Porto Korfou. You can find the Alimos Marina with almost 1,000 charter yachts in Kalamaki, the seaside suburb of Athens. Kalamaki and Lavrion are the closest ports to the Cyclades Islands for your yacht holiday.
Paros is one of the few charter ports in the heart of the Cyclades. If you’re renting a sailing yacht from Kos or Rhodes, you can better explore the Dodecanese Islands near the Turkish sea.
Book a Spanish charter sailboat-fiesta and siesta land!
Spain, with Mallorca’s iconic island, Ibiza’s popular party spot, the Iberian Peninsula’s long coastline, and the Canary Islands’ all-year-old archipelago, has very competent sailboat holiday facilities. For day trips or frequent escapes to the Balearic Islands, Palamós on the Costa Brava and Barcelona is awesome.

Why do so many people love a sailing holiday?
Did you know that 85 percent of all people in Europe who are on a bareboat charter holiday choose a sailboat? This type of yacht is especially prevalent in Croatia, Greece, Italy, Turkey, and Mallorca. So there’s a much wider range of yachts to choose from than motorboats to rent your boat, and they’re usually cheaper than motor yachts or catamarans. However, the Caribbean is the second largest sailing charter area in the world. BVI Sailing is very popular among U.S. residents.
Creating a Charter of the Boat Demand
Sailing is a wonderful hobby, as is sport and skill. You can do it competitively in a friendly regatta with your friends, and when you continue to practice, you can learn and improve once you go on a sailing trip. The other advantage of this kind of yachting is that you’re becoming a true pro in teamwork.
Although standing at the helm and pressing a few buttons on a motor yacht is enough for one person, everyone needs to work together like a well-oiled sailboat machine. It also has an educational component in the case of family vacations. Via activities, children can carry out the important tasks that teach them to be responsible and very rewarding. It helps parents and their children connect at a very different and positive level than their healthy everyday lives.
Apart from the recreational and team-building dimensions, there are also other benefits of chartering a yacht. Of course, one of them is spending a lot of time surrounded by the most beautiful scenery and nature.
You should also feel guilt-free instead of renting a motorboat since you’re not using any fuel when you’re sailing with the wind. Sailing holidays are a great, noise-free, and relaxing, peaceful experience. This form of vacation has a very calming impact and is environmentally friendly. So go ahead and enjoy the cruise!
What kind of skills do I need to rent a sailboat?
A certain degree of seamanship is required to charter and direct a watercraft. Unless you are a citizen of Canada, the United States, or France, the law would most likely require you to possess a regular skipper license to charter a vessel as well. If you do not have the requisite sailing experience or a skipper license, you can always opt for a skippered captain charter.
In most European countries, skipper skills are sufficient for one charter member. A second community member should be able to co-ski for sailboat rentals in Greece.
If you are planning a sailing holiday in Croatia, you will need a radio license. Since sailing is teamwork on a sailboat charter, the whole group will have fun. Everyone can help with motions and be an important part of the process – making the experience of boating so special.
The other choice is a flotilla holiday where you are sailing but moving in the safety of a larger group of flotilla yachts and have the lead boat’s added advantage, which has a technician who can help you with some emergency or problems.
Why it’s wise to book a skipper
It’s best not to overestimate your skills when you make bareboat sailing rentals. So be reasonable to judge the local sailing conditions. Take into account tidal fluctuations, climate change, and other territorial features at the charter destination. Keep in mind that excellent skills and experience are required to moor a sailboat in tight spaces with the wind coming from the side. If you don’t know if you can run the yacht yourself, do a skippered charter instead and let someone else do the job for you. It means that you and the charter crew have the best and most fun way to enjoy your sailing experience.
What is the advantage of a sailing boat over a catamaran?
In addition to having multiple hulls, more than 80% of all charter yachts are monohulls. The maneuverability of a monohull craft is somewhat different from the operation of a catamaran. It’s true that the multihulls are very steady and have a shallow draught, but unlike a single-hull vessel, they can’t go very well to the sea, so you need to start using the engine. And when you’re sailing toward the current, you can always sail on a monohull sailboat. And with the wind, you’ll find that they’re stronger and more sporty than the catamarans.
Sailboats may grieve more than multihulls, but this is part of the true classic feeling associated with a sailing trip for many sailors. It also helps the vessel to respond to wave motion in harsher weather. The added space on the multihull and the fact that the sailing yacht is largely under the deck is a difference in both the exterior and the interior. On the other hand, it lies on a catamaran on the same floor as the wheelhouse. It means that you can enjoy more space and better views from the inside.
Budgeting for your charter holidays
Sailboats are made for sailing and are often less lavish than other boats, making charters cheaper. There is also a range of smaller sailboats available than catamarans, for example, which means that fuel, docking, and general costs would be lower. However, we still have many large sailboats available for charter, up to 127ft, so there will be something to fit your taste and budget.
The important check-list before you set sail…
If you’ve never been sailing, or it’s been a while since your last outing, here are a few reminders/recommendations about what to do to make sure you’re completely prepared for your charter. It is best to be completely informed and thoroughly study the navigation routes and weather predictions before and during your holiday.
Next, note that there is minimal space in the cabins, so opt for simple folding luggage, not rigid suitcases or bags that cannot be packed on board.
Secondly, as far as navigation is concerned, do not forget to carry the area cruise guide so that you know all your options, as well as the official charts of your navigation region. Sailboats for charter are usually fitted with the requisite guides and charts but may be in a foreign language or impaired.
Don’t forget your boat rental contract, your required navigation licenses and permits, your train or airline tickets, and your passport, if applicable. Also, check with your bank that you can continue with the payment of the ship’s deposit via credit card printing.
Every sailboat crew member should carry sunglasses, gloves, sunscreen, a head torch, a warm jacket, and non-slip shoes (preferably white-soled). Don’t forget your hat or swimsuit, depending on your destination. You’re still want to make sure you have a stocked first aid kit on board with you. Fishing enthusiasts might want to carry their gear… It is also advisable to carry some nice books or magazines to occupy yourself in your cabin or on the sun deck! Board games and cards are perfect for your evenings and aperitifs in the cockpit or the saloon when others are busy preparing the catch of the day…
