What’s a Bareboat Charter?

A bareboat charter is a yacht rental, where you hire a yacht without a crew. Bareboat charters are usually reserved for sailors. There is a possibility to add a skipper or a hostess or a mixture of the two to Bareboat charters. If you charter a bareboat and you have the relevant license, you will be in charge of everything from navigation, sailing, mooring, and safety. It’s up to you if you plan to cook or whether you decide to eat at nearby restaurants along the way.

Bareboat charters provide a great deal of flexibility to explore wherever and whenever (weather-based, of course!) it provides an exceptional holiday experience for the entire family. At least one member of the party must be an experienced sailor, or you can pre-arrange to have a skipper on board if you’re visiting a new area for the first time and want to relax and let the locals lead you around the coast.

Types of charters for bareboat

A single hull – sailboats

The classic bareboat charter, monohull sailboats will give you performance, freedom, and the real feeling of sailing. There are thousands of bareboat sailboats in the country, ranging from 30 to 50 feet and 1 to 5 cabins. If you want to enjoy pure sailing and have experienced sailors on board, we will usually suggest a monohull sailboat.

Sailing Catamarans

Yachtco is proud to work with the renowned builders to deliver award-winning catamarans. Move aboard Lagoon, Nautitech, Prestige, or Fountaine Pajot catamarans and explore the spacious en-suite staterooms and revolutionary features such as the expansive flying bridge or the simplicity with which these boats can operate; Yachtco catamarans are the ideal platforms for amazing journeys at sea.

Catamarans are among the fastest-growing charter areas globally, offering great comfort and privacy while providing vast communal areas for recreation with friends and family. Bareboat catamarans don’t heel (tip) like a monohull, making the yacht feel more secure. Catamarans are preferable to those who suffer or who are concerned about being seasick. Their shallow nature also makes them ideally suited to moving closer to shore while exploring islands and inlets. Especially in areas like the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

If you’re a couple of parties or a family party of novice sailors, we would usually suggest a catamaran. Please note that catamarans are generally more costly per person than monohulls since the boat is larger. However, this is compensated for by paying for extra room for everybody!

Sailboats

Classically refined and contemporary fitted, the sailboats set the benchmark for exceptional efficiency and comfort. Backed by the leading manufacturer Beneteau’s ship-building heritage, these vessels are the prime option for some of the most sought-after yacht charters available.

Tips to Good Bareboat Charters

A good bareboat charter starts long before you arrive at the marina. The whole crew should have a perfect picture of what they’re going to get into. Before you book your bareboat charter, we strongly recommend that you do the following:

  • Clearly explain to those concerned what is required of them.
  • Check out the forecast twice a day! Read our Weather page for more comprehensive details on the types of winds/climate you might be sailing in.
  • Plan an itinerary that isn’t unnecessarily aggressive-unless everybody is seasoned, sailors. Note, many people at the party probably want to come back refreshed and comfortable from their holidays, not stressed by oversailing!
  • Get agreement from everybody on the itinerary. If you are unsure about your itinerary, ask us for personalized advice on the best things to do at your chosen destination. The Yachtco team has sailed widely all over the world and has plenty of suggestions!
  • Attach a hostess and a skipper to create a great mix of sailing, local insight, and relaxation.

One of the most sought after bareboat charter destinations is Croatia

Charter of bareboat in figures

A bareboat charter is often carried out on ships up to 17 m, as this is still a manageable size for a leisure skipper. Skippers and possibly the crew are typically more critical than the ship. Of course, a smaller yacht may also be chartered with a crew, depending on the charterer’s wishes.

There are an estimated 11,000 charter yachts in the country. Approximately 85% of all yachts are bareboat yachts, and the Mediterranean Sea is the largest bareboat charter area in the world. Croatia, with around 5,000 bareboat charter yachts, is the country with the largest share of them.

Around ninety-five percent of all charter vessels are yachts, 12 percent of which are catamarans, and 88 percent are monohulls. So there is only 5 percent of bareboat charter vacations on motorboats.

A bareboat charter is particularly popular with German-speaking customers because they prefer this type of independent holiday. For example, the British and other nationalities tend to go on a flotilla holiday and enjoy this nature’s social holiday.

Bareboat rentals in Greece are most common in the following ports: Corfu, Preveza, Lefkas, Skiathos, Missolonghi, Kalamaki (Athens), Lavrion, Paros, Kos, Rhodes.

Why do sailors love bareboat charter?

There are considerable costs to run a yacht, and many sailors don’t spend a lot of time on their ships. For them, hiring a charter yacht is much better on their own for the holidays’ duration. The second benefit is that they can freely pick a spot like this, and they don’t have to think about getting their boat there first.

The bareboat charter contract ensures that everything will be ordered and run properly when you get on board. All you need to do is decide what kind of boat you want to go to and where you want to go.

The benefit is that you have complete privacy when chartering a bareboat yacht. You and your family and friends are going to be undisturbed as there is no extra crew. The entire ship is yours!

What is the expense of a sailing yacht charter?

The average weekly charter price for a Mediterranean bareboat is around € 2.600. The Mediterranean rate is the highest in Western Europe, with an average of €3,100 per week. The Balearic Islands are the most expensive, with an average of €3,184 per week—the far east of the Mediterranean, the lower the cruise’s rental price.

Greece is the most competitive nation with an average price of about € 2,653 per week, followed by Croatia with an average price of € 2,869. If you want to hire a skipper instead of a bareboat charter, you can add € 150–€ 300 per day to the bill depending on the venue.

Mallorca and the Canaries are widely sought-after bareboat areas in Spain. Scan for available charter yachts in the following list: Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Mallorca/El Arenal, Mallorca/Ca’n Pastilla, Mallorca/Cala d’Or, Mallorca/Porto Colom, Ibiza/San Antonio, Ibiza/San Antonio, Tenerife/Las Galletas, Lanzarote/Arrecife.

For early bookings in autumn and winter, prices are around 10% lower than in spring. The average price gap between high and low seasons is about 40%. There are some great last-minute deals available if you can plan quickly, but the best yachts will be reserved at that time.

What kind of charter yachts are there?

Sailing yachts are the most popular bareboat charter vessels. But on a charter holiday without a skipper, motor yachts and catamarans are also very popular. While sailing yachts are a classic yachting sensation, catamarans are an excellent choice if you need more space. Usually, bareboat charter yachts are up to 17 m in length, and larger boats are leased with a skipper and even more crew.

What kind of a license do I need to charter a sailboat?

You need a license or proof that you have enough sailing experience to hire a sailing yacht or a motor yacht.

If you charter a bareboat yacht in a European/Mediterranean region, the type of license you need depends on the country in question. The ICC–International Certificate of Competence is widely accepted, but it can be subject to restrictions, such as how far you can go offshore, etc. In addition to the VHF license, Croatia requires an actual skipper license.

What do you have to pack on a bareboat charter yacht?

Generally speaking, it can be said that it is better to stick to the required things on a bareboat charter since there is little room onboard a yacht. You should, of course, take enough clothes for all kinds of weather. We recommend that you not place it in a hard case but in a duffle or collapsible bag that can be easily packed in a locker or closet.

Deck shoes with a bright sole during the maneuvers keep the teak clean and keep your feet secure. Bear in mind that there are no washing machines on a bareboat holiday, so maybe take some hand-washing fluid in the case or buy some at the charter destination.

A bareboat charter is usually for a limited time in yachting. There are hundreds of charter brokers or bareboat agents. Such companies provide only more specialized services for yacht locations and travel agencies, similar to travel agents. Their goal in terms of price and location is to use their experience and networks to find the consumer’s perfect bareboat.

Just like online travel agencies that sell unsold airline tickets and hotel rooms at a fraction of the cost, there are now bareboat charter brokers for last-minute travelers where they can find great deals.

While bareboat typically refers to any boat that can be chartered without a skipper or crew, bareboat yachts, like catamarans, are generally protected by bareboat.

Bareboat hire has become popular since the mid-1990s, and particularly since the early 2000s. There has been an increasing demand for yacht holidays, and many experienced and semi-experienced yachts now consider hiring a bareboat easier and cheaper than buying a yacht. While both the international leisure travel industry (especially outdoor holiday activities) and the boating industry have boomed over the last decade, the bareboat charter industry, which includes both of these activities, has also expanded.

There is an additional legal distinction in the United States regarding bareboat versus charter for hire or skipper. Suppose individuals pool their funds to bareboat so that the capable master among them can skipper for the party, even if the master is not legally a paid skipper. In that case, he/she now assumes his/her legal obligations. This can have far-reaching effects in the event of adverse events at sea.

Choosing for a yacht

You’re able to take a bareboat charter yacht once you’ve designed it. You know where you want to sail. All you need to do is book a bareboat charter from our website or contact us directly with the information above, including the date you will be on the ground to take a yacht on a bareboat cruise (this helps with scheduling) and a list of the crew you are bringing on board.

We’re going to get back to you with the yacht accessible from your place and the cost. Moving to any of our airport booking offices will incur extra charges. If you need some time to speak to your team and consider your options, boats will stay on standby for 3 to 4 days. After making payments in advance, you will receive a contract, and you will receive a boarding pass after making complete payments.

Please contact us for advice on choosing the best yacht/boat to meet your needs. Our offices are open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday. And our agents are always available to respond immediately.

Both our yachts and ships are covered by insurance and refundable deposits. In case of damage to the boat, a security deposit is expected. The sections of the charter shall cover safety deposits for non-insurance.

Refundable deposit: if the amount calculated for the loss is not equal to the amount of the security deposit paid, only the amount of the cost will be charged, and the balance will be returned to the customer. An example of this may be a broken glass or a damaged window.

In the event of a more severe injury, the full amount would be paid. When you pay by credit card, your credit card will be unblocked by returning the yacht to the marina mentioned in the contract. You can also pay in cash for your bareboat charter, and the same refundable deposit applies.

A non-refundable deposit (losses sustained or waived) is the amount (€ 140 – € 280) paid to the insurance house + € 100, which will be refunded without damages upon check-in.

All expenditures should be reported immediately to the support number.

Here are some of the things you should do, so the next generation can also enjoy this opportunity:

  • Do not throw garbage in the sea while sailing.
  • Do not infringe the law on fishing.
  • Save marine species and plants.
  • Do not dispose of waste from a vessel near the shore and in a protected area.
  • Apply to eligible environmental contaminants
  • Save drinking water wherever possible by not taking long showers or washing vessels.
  • Do not drink water from the water tanks on your sailing boats because it is not safe to drink.
  • Save as much power as you can, try windsurfing in an atmosphere that welcomes it and avoid water boats and scooters when sailing.
